I am deeply grateful for the healing of the smoking habit

I am deeply grateful for the healing of the smoking habit. This healing did not come easily. I had tried several times to stop and had asked Christian Science practitioners to help me at different times. The arguments I needed to overcome in my own thinking were: "There is pleasure in smoking; it is the only bad habit I have; I cannot stop while others around me are smoking."

I wanted very much to become a member of the Church of Christ, Scientist, and at times I resented the fact that one could not become a member while indulging this habit. As my desire for church membership grew and I began to claim my real identity as the spiritual child of God, my healing came. I now see the wisdom of the demand for freedom from this habit as a requirement for church membership.

The healing came after I remembered something a practitioner had quoted to me from a Christian Science lecture she had heard. The lecturer had said that a radio station pauses every fifteen minutes for station identification. Then he said how wonderful it would be if Christian Scientists would pause often during the day to claim their spiritual identity; then there would be more healing and progress. I began to do this more often and more consistently, affirming that as the child of God, the spiritual idea of divine Mind, I reflected the qualities of purity and completeness. Sometimes a statement from the Bible or from Science and Health or from some of the other writings of Mrs. Eddy came to my thought to support my declarations.
