The "keynote of harmony"
One often hears the reassuring remark "Don't be afraid!" This is usually said with the best of intentions, but more times than not it has little practical effect. Much more than mere words is required to silence fear.
Mrs. Eddy tells us, "Christian scientific practice begins with Christ's keynote of harmony, 'Be not afraid!'" Science and Health, p. 410; But she does not leave it there. Through her discovery of Christian Science she has shown us the scientific way to silence fear and its deleterious effects on the health and happiness of mankind. She writes, "Fear is the fountain of sickness, and you master fear and sin through divine Mind; hence it is through divine Mind that you overcome disease." pp. 391, 392;
Fear springs from the prevalent belief that man is a material entity having a personal mind of his own and dwelling in a material environment where disease, lack, accident, or death can occur at any moment without prior warning. Sense testimony seems to give credibility to this dismaying picture, and it is only through spiritual enlightenment that one can challenge it and prove its impotence to frighten or harm.
