In the year 1916, I was informed by a physician that I had a very serious condition of diabetes. He predicted that unless I began and remained on a proposed strict diet I could not live for more than two years. I then visited another physician, hoping that his diagnosis might prove the first one to be incorrect. I was told, however, that in addition to diabetes I had a serious condition of ulcers, and an immediate operation was urged. I was filled with great fear.

Later, while I was resting at home one day, my wife asked me to go to the neighborhood store for something she needed for her baking. The grocer, noticing my dejected attitude, asked what was wrong. After I told him of my troubles, he asked me if I had ever thought of trying Christian Science. When I told him that I knew nothing about it, he gave me a brief explanation of Mary Baker Eddy's teachings. When I showed an interest, he helped me obtain the name of a practitioner listed in The Christian Science Journal. I called and made an appointment for the next day.

The visit with the practitioner was most inspiring and encouraging. He told me that Christian Science teaches that God is Love and the only creator, that He is the only physician, and that He would heal me if I turned completely and trustingly to Him. The practitioner then took up prayerful work for me after showing me how to study the weekly Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly. He further recommended that I attend regularly the branch Church of Christ, Scientist, nearest my neighborhood. I did as he directed, and almost immediately I felt marked improvement in my physical condition.
