Words spoken to me by a Christian Science nurse helped me accept...
Words spoken to me by a Christian Science nurse helped me accept the Christ into my consciousness as I lay in bed, unable to walk, paralyzed in my left side after a stroke. These words were spoken so lovingly and with so much conviction that I found myself with my feet on the floor ready to go. The nurse put her arm around my waist and began to sing quietly Hymn No. 139 from the Christian Science Hymnal:
I walk with Love along the way,
And O, it is a holy day;
No more I suffer cruel fear,
I feel God's presence with me here;
The joy that none can take away
Is mine; I walk with Love today.
I walked to the next room, then out onto the veranda. I felt I was walking on air; it was no effort at all. I worked diligently with many statements of Truth set forth in the writings of Mary Baker Eddy. I learned to count each trial as a blessing and expressed gratitude for the lessons learned from every difficulty as, in their turn, they were overcome. As a result of this prayerful work I regained the use of my left arm, and my general health improved.
Through the study of Christian Science and the help of a practitioner, who has answered my calls with much dedication and unselfishness, I have come to know God as good—the God I have learned to turn to in all the problems of rearing three children.
As my family matured, there arose a need for a new home. We had outgrown the former home, but it seemed impossible to obtain another. A practitioner provided inspiration and reminded me of the promise God made to the children of Israel as He led them out of Egypt (Ex. 23:20): "Behold, I send an Angel before thee, to keep thee in the way, and to bring thee into the place which I have prepared."
We moved into a flat until the means became available for a new home to be built for us. The first step in the unfoldment of these means came in the form of a position of employment offered to me. I considered the position beyond my capabilities, but nevertheless I was led to accept the offer after study of a statement I found in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mrs. Eddy (p. 233): "Every day makes its demands upon us for higher proofs rather than professions of Christian power." Further in the same paragraph, we read, "This is an element of progress, and progress is the law of God, whose law demands of us only what we can certainly fulfil." Experience gained in this position led to better employment and to an income sufficient to finance the new home we so badly needed.
High standards in education have been obtained by my family through the acknowledgment that man is a spiritual idea, reflecting the one divine Mind, and through denial of the mortal concept of a limited intelligence. I am very grateful for class instruction and for the annual association meeting, which always brings much joy, revelation, and fruitage. I am also grateful for membership in a local branch church, where much love and help has been expressed.
