A few years ago I experienced a healing...

A few years ago I experienced a healing in Christian Science that has had a profound effect on my approach to the challenges that have confronted me since. It was my pleasure to commute to work by motorcycle across a major bridge. One morning, while on the bridge, moving at a fairly high speed, I was faced with some large chunks of ice that had fallen onto the road from another vehicle. I was unable to miss hitting the ice. I drove through it, skidded, hit the side rail of the bridge, and bounced back into the moving traffic, finding my foot caught under the motorcycle. The pain was intense, and it also seemed that I might lose consciousness.

The first thought that came to me was that man does not lapse from harmony. Mrs. Eddy tells us in Science and Health (pp. 470, 471), "The relations of God and man, divine Principle and idea, are indestructible in Science; and Science knows no lapse from nor return to harmony, but holds the divine order or spiritual law, in which God and all that He creates are perfect and eternal, to have remained unchanged in its eternal history." To believe that I had just experienced a near fatal accident was to admit that there were some moments in our experience when ever-present, omnipotent God was not in control, a moment when I was not reflecting the harmony of divine being. I saw the existence of such a moment to be impossible, and I held to this fact all the way to my destination.

I seemed to have a very difficult time walking to work, but I continued to thank God for the truth that had come to me right when I needed it. Rather than voice anything of the experience at work, as I had been tempted to do with experiences in the past to gain a little human sympathy, I continued to be grateful. This happened to be a Wednesday, and at noontime I walked to a Christian Science testimony meeting and expressed my gratitude for the truth that had come to me in time of need. That afternoon I was completely free of any discomfort with my foot, and had no thought remaining that for one moment I had been separated from the presence of God.
