What Is a Practitioner?

Most testimonies in the Christian Science periodicals mention Christian Science practitioners. Usually the testifier relates that he has turned to a practitioner and has been healed of sickness or has had some other kind of problem solved. Those unacquainted with the teachings of Christian Science may wonder what role a practitioner plays and why Christian Scientists naturally turn to one for help for solving not only physical and spiritual problems but difficulties relating to business, personal relationships, and many other aspects of life.

In answer to the question "How would you define Christian Science.?" Mrs. Eddy writes, "As the law of God, the law of good, interpreting and demonstrating the divine Principle and rule of universal harmony."  Rudimental Divine Science, p. 1;

In a very real sense a Christian Science practitioner is one who is practicing spiritual law, in other words, one who is utilizing spiritual law to defend himself and his patient against the encroachments of evil, or mortal mind. Explaining Christian Science practice, Mrs. Eddy writes, "The thoughts of the practitioner should be imbued with a clear conviction of the omnipotence and omnipresence of God; that He is All, and that there can be none beside Him; that God is good, and the producer only of good; and hence, that whatever militates against health, harmony, or holiness, is an unjust unsurper of the throne of the controller of all mankind." pp. 9, 10;
