Christian Science came to me through a healing of one of the members of my family of a disease that according to medical verdict was incurable. My relative's healing awoke in me the desire to know more about this religion, which had already been introduced to me several times. It seemed that I was not ready to receive the teaching before.

When I started to study Christian Science, I was a slave to tobacco and alcohol, and soon perceived that these habits are irreconcilable with the teachings of Christian Science. In the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, she writes (p. 224): "Truth brings the elements of liberty" and "The power of God brings deliverance to the captive."

Although I tried to get rid of the smoking and drinking habits through my own prayer while studying Christian Science, I did not succeed. Therefore I went to a Christian Science practitioner. I told him of the problems I was coping with and asked him for help. The practitioner said to me, "Stop fighting these habits, because you will lose the battle." I asked the practitioner what I had to do, then. His reply was, "You must know the true relation of God and man, and when you know that, you will be free."
