Although I have been a student of Christian Science from childhood...

Although I have been a student of Christian Science from childhood and attended a Christian Science Sunday School, I didn't join a branch church until some years later. It came about this way. I was having a continual pain on my right side and went to a Christian Science practitioner for help through prayer. Upon learning that I wasn't a church member, he told me I must put my shoulder to the wheel and get busy working for God. He said nothing about the sickness. This was an unexpected answer. But it did awaken me. I knew at once what I must do. The fear and pain left and never returned, and soon afterward I joined a branch church.

That God is the source of man's supply was proved in the early 1930's when it seemed impossible to find employment. After a long day of job hunting I returned home one evening to find that there had been a fire in the building in which I lived. I had lost everything, including all my clothes and my Bible and copy of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. As I counted my last few dollars, I knew the wardrobe would have to wait. But the study of the Lesson-Sermon as outlined in the Christian Science Quarterly could not wait.

A quotation from Miscellaneous Writings by Mrs. Eddy gave me courage. It reads (p. 307): "God gives you His spiritual ideas, and in turn, they give you daily supplies. Never ask for to-morrow: it is enough that divine Love is an ever-present help; and if you wait, never doubting, you will have all you need every moment." With the words "never doubting" uppermost in my consciousness, I felt free to take these last few dollars and purchase new books. The very hour this decision was made I was called to report for work the next day. I was steadily employed by the same firm until my marriage.
