The Individual Overcoming of Lack

Today much is heard of the effort to eliminate poverty. Groups and individuals search for the cause of lack and set forth poverty as the underlying basis of many evils in human experience. Usually poverty is thought of as a state of being indigent caused by the lack of money with which to purchase material necessities. However, a closer look at poverty is needed if it is to be really corrected.

We frequently hear of someone who has large financial resources and yet is poor in happiness, home, and health. We also hear of the one who, though possessing little money, is rich in love, joy, and service to others. Christian Science teaches that true wealth is not in matter but in spiritual ideas, in the understanding of God and of man's inseparable relationship to Him.

This Science makes clear to mankind the teachings of Christ Jesus, who came to show the way to spiritual riches. He looked to Spirit, God, as the source of supply for all good, never doubting that it was always at hand. He told Peter to obtain the tax money from the fish's mouth, and he fed the multitude when five loaves and two fishes seemed the only food available.
