Forty-nine years ago I was introduced to Christian Science in a rather unusual way. Even though I had been delving into various religions and philosophies for years, I knew little about Science beyond the fact that it existed. One day a medical nurse brought me a copy of The Christian Science Journal and told me of some remarkable healings that one of her friends had had. I was only mildly interested and, after looking at the Journal in a desultory manner, I laid it aside and did not think of it again until our baby developed symptoms of acute meningitis and the doctor did not expect him to live through the day.

Reaching out for some hope, I took the Journal to the baby's bedside and sat there reading aloud from it for hours. Members of the family were gathered in the next room waiting for the end to come, and every now and then one of them would peep in; but they were very cooperative when I said that I did not want a word of discouragement uttered in his presence. Gradually he relaxed, his temperature and his breathing became normal, and he quietly went to sleep. When the doctor came back, he looked at him for a while in speechless amazement and then said, "Boy, you've got the fifteen puzzles whipped to a custard."

I did not doubt that it was God's power that had brought about this healing, and I was very grateful, though apparently I was not ready for Science at that time.
