"What cannot God do?" (Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, p. 135)

"What cannot God do?" (Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, p. 135.) That protection is afforded by an understanding of God's omnipotence was proved to me during World War II.

One morning the aircraft carrier on which I served was bombed by an enemy plane. Our ship had been ready to launch an air attack, carrying a new type of highly explosive bomb. The resulting conflagration was like the effect of dropping a lighted match into a matchbox. When I realized the ship had been hit, I immediately thought of John's words, "God is love" (I John 4:16), and then of these words from the Christian Science textbook (p. 571): "Clad in the panoply of Love, human hatred cannot reach you." Thus did I place myself in God's protection.

Obedient to shipboard regulations, I had my dog tags and my whistle on a chain around my neck. I found a life jacket, which I put on but had to discard later in order to open a hatch for myself and others to escape through. When the group came through the hatch onto the hangar deck, they all ran toward the stern. I seemed undecided and then was led to move toward the boat deck on the side of the ship. Here, before I abandoned ship, I found another life jacket which I put on.
