LEAVEN
Exodus 12:34
A little leaven lifts the entire mass,
given some time.
Alas! the Israelites had no time to add leaven
to the dough waiting in kneading troughs,
when the Egyptians told them to leave.
To the fleeing, it seemed—
the heavy sad bread that it made,
baked as it was in the wilderness—
food of affliction to be eaten in sorrow.
The retrospective eye
sees it nourish escape out of bondage.
The leaven of Truth is at work. Be at peace.
It foretells a morrow of manna.
