Consciousness Is Basic

It is important to learn all we can about consciousness because consciousness is basic in life. What we seem to be or do or cognize begins with consciousness and is controlled by it. Consciousness impels our thoughts, our ideals, our sins, our states of health, our mistakes, our accomplishments.

In human experience good and evil appear to be mixed together in consciousness, and the individual is sometimes animated by right and sometimes by wrong. Christian Science explains this confusion and shows how to correct it. It reveals man's identity to be an individual consciousness, which reflects the one Spirit, God. And it exposes the falsity of the material consciousness, which is aware of evil and matter, things totally unlike God.

The first step to take in learning about consciousness through Science is to acknowledge God as one infinite conscious Being. Mary Baker Eddy writes: "All consciousness is Mind, and Mind is God. Hence there is but one Mind; and that one is the infinite good, supplying all Mind by the reflection, not the subdivision, of God. Whatever else claims to be mind, or consciousness, is untrue." Retrospection and Introspection, p. 56;
