Effective Selfless Prayer

What is scientific healing prayer? Christian Science has taught many how to pray hopefully, consistently, and effectively. Mrs. Eddy says in the textbook, Science and Health, "The prayer that reforms the sinner and heals the sick is an absolute faith that all things are possible to God,—a spiritual understanding of Him, an unselfed love." Science and Health, p. 1;

Christ Jesus prayed the prayer of faith that rested upon spiritual understanding. He depended wholly on God for the power that heals. And unselfed love permeated his entire experience. Even in his darkest hour he prayed, "Not as I will, but as thou wilt." Matt. 26:39; Such humble prayer includes the complete surrendering of belief in whatever constitutes a mortal, finite sense of self. It requires the unselfed love that sees all reality as one eternal God, good, and His spiritual expression and asks nothing other than that this truth make itself manifest humanly. Prayer in Christian Science is the acknowledgment of man's oneness, or unity, with eternal good. This acknowledgment can take no higher form than that of unselfed love.

When prayer appears to go unanswered, may it not be because unselfed love is lacking, because the one praying is outlining the answer, asking for what he thinks he wants instead of desiring that God's will be revealed? Spiritual man is the expression of God, Love, and has only one purpose or function—to glorify God. Based on this truth, the prayer of unselfed love is always effective and possible of instantaneous healing for whatever is inharmonious.
