The Value of a Consistent Life
In the study and practice of Christian Science one soon learns the value and cumulative effect of a consistent life. Healings multiply and reinforce one's trust in the Almighty. The daily experience of God's presence and protection becomes more substantial to the individual than the temptations and fears of mortal mind or the material sense of existence. In discussing obedience, Mrs. Eddy says, "A progressive life is the reality of Life that unfolds its immortal Principle." Miscellaneous Writing, p. 117:
Consistency demonstrates unity of thought and life. Inconsistency indicates division, infidelity, a sense of dualism. The honest student of this Science will daily purify his thinking in order to demonstrate in increasing degree the single standard of living it demands. The fact that there is just one God, one creative power, determines that all that is real reflects the nature of that one source. Man in God's likeness is spiritual: he is truthful, he is alive; he manifests integrity, purity, intelligence. Christ Jesus said, "When thine eye is single, thy whole body also is full of light." Luke 11:34;
Is the demand for consistency limiting to one's activity and to the breadth of one's experience? That depends upon one's point of view. To the worldly-minded it might seem demanding to live by the precepts of Christian Science; but to the one who has seen something of the fallacy of material standards of judgment, it is the way of freedom and harmony. The narrow way is narrow only to the undisciplined thought; it is not restrictive to the one who wants to obey his divine Principle. The rules of mathematics may seem demanding, but obedience is the way of accomplishment and dominion.
