"Can you swim?"
[For young teens]
Ask any of your friends at school the question, "Can you swim?" and you are likely to receive the almost unanimous reply, "Of course we can!" Oceans, lakes, and countless swimming pools afford ample opportunity for learning.
Ask the same friends, "What would you do if someone suddenly pushed you off the end of a pier?" With a look of surprise, amusement, or scorn they would reply, "Why, we'd just swim!"
There would be no hesitation on the part of a trained swimmer. He would not have to contemplate, "Shall I strike out with my right or left hand? Shall I kick with my feet? Shall I turn on my back and float?" No. The swimmer would swim to dry land by the shortest route. His training and familiarity with water would eliminate any thought of fear or of inability to cope with the situation.
