For many years I lived in dread of public speaking
For many years I lived in dread of public speaking. I refused invitations to speak whenever it was possible to do so. When ordinary courtesy demanded acceptance of an invitation, the mere thought of the ordeal to be faced caused me intense anguish many days in advance of the engagement. Inability to sleep well was one of the penalties which seemed to be demanded of me for my reluctantly given consent to appear before an audience.
Every effort to overcome my almost morbid fear of speaking failed. At last, having committed myself to a talk of considerable length before a formidably large audience, I turned in earnest to Christian Science for an answer to my problem.
The answer came, of course, and it has been a permanent answer. It stemmed from an absolute reliance on God as the source of the poise, courage, and composure I had previously sought in vain. This verse from the Bible strengthened me as the time approached for my talk (Ps. 18:32): "It is God that girdeth me with strength, and maketh my way perfect."
