The Greatest Breakthrough

Until the moment of Christ Jesus' resurrection, human history offers little proof of man's immortal identity. Such questions as, Where was I before the earth was formed? Where or what shall I be when the earth has disintegrated into dust? find no answers in ancient or modern scientific research.

There have been those in the history of the world who have pondered the meaning of life. Moses, for example, perceived that there is something more to life than bondage. To his awakening thought appeared a bush which was afire, but the bush remained unharmed by the flames. Here was a symbol of indestructible identity—a concept opposite to the material sense of creation. Out of the bush came the voice of God, the beginning of Moses' instructions for leading his people out of slavery.

As we view this event through Christian Science, we see that the exodus of the children of Israel from Egypt typifies the awakening of individuals today to the truth of immortal identity. Mrs. Eddy writes of this in Science and Health. She says, "As the children of Israel were guided triumphantly through the Red Sea, the dark ebbing and flowing tides of human fear,—as they were led through the wilderness, walking wearily through the great desert of human hopes, and anticipating the promised joy,—so shall the spiritual idea guide all right desires in their passage from sense to Soul, from a material sense of existence to the spiritual, up to the glory prepared for them who love God."
