In the early part of this century, Christian Science was presented to me at a time when I was suffering from ill health and mental despondency. I was in continuous pain as the result of a spinal condition. My medical advisers told me that an operation was the only means of getting relief, and arrangements were accordingly made to carry this through.

But God's provision for me was entirely different, for on the very day I made the decision to enter the hospital, a salesman friend of the family called at our home for a social evening. On making inquiry regarding my health, he was told of the impending operation, whereupon he took from his pocket a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and placed it open before me on a table, stating, "If you will read this book, you never will need to undergo an operation."

"Oh, Christian Science," I replied. "I heard of that as a child, but I'll have to tell you I have no faith in it."
