A Right Sense of Home Is Important

There are today magazines and special sections in newspapers that are concerned with homes. They all have much to say about how a house should be built, how it should look, and how it should be arranged. We learn in Christian Science that we are ideas of Mind, God, and our true home is our consciousness of Mind and its qualities. We do not neglect the modern material advantages, but we make use of them, as they are needed, to help us express a true sense of home.

Our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, had a high concept of home. On page 100 of "Miscellaneous Writings" she tells us: "Pure humanity, friendship, home, the interchange of love, bring to earth a foretaste of heaven. They unite terrestrial and celestial joys, and crown them with blessings infinite." In other places in her writings she compares home with heaven. Christ Jesus told his disciples to "preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand" (Matt. 10:7). Just as the kingdom of heaven is always at hand, so may we be conscious of the presence of home.

Godlike qualities, such as peace, harmony, order, purity, freshness, and beauty, may be found right in our own human homes. But these qualities should not be limited to our own homes; they should irradiate our whole community. As a result of the spiritualization of our thoughts of home, we express harmony and attract those who are searching for a place of refuge, for understanding, and for encouragement.
