Practicing Christian Love

Perhaps one of the shortest yet most profound statements of Christian theology recorded in the Holy Scriptures is the dynamic truth, "God is love" (I John 4: 16). With the advent of Christ Jesus, the power of Christian love burst upon humankind, satisfying starved affections, restoring hope, spiritually regenerating the minds of men, redeeming, healing, saving. Jesus' humanity gave evidence of his divinity, his unparalleled Christly love.

Christian Science demands a pure affection, a love for God and man that patterns the selfless love portrayed by Jesus. The infinite Christ-power of Science can find expression only through the Christian qualities we embrace. Thought permeated with such graces as kindness, tenderness, thoughtfulness, mercy, and compassion responds to and imparts the Science of Christ-healing. Self-love breeds such evils as envy, jealousy, contempt for others, deceit, unmercifulness— states of thought not conducive to the demonstration of Christian healing.

Christian love is the vital ingredient of Science. As self-love is exchanged for Christian love, impatience for Christly gentleness, criticism for thoughtful consideration of the welfare of others, thought progresses from the letter of Science to the holy inspiration of this Christlike theology. Healings follow.
