Activities for the Armed Services

"How many families are having to do without because you win consistently at poker?" was a question asked a serviceman by a Christian Science Minister for the Armed Services. Until the Minister hurled this telling question, the serviceman saw no harm in his gambling. Other arguments had failed to reach him, but this question forced him to recognize that his gambling was hurting others because it took money needed by his buddies for the support of their families.

Although he had attended Christian Science Sunday School for several years, he departed from its teachings after entering the Armed Forces. Besides earning the reputation of being the heaviest gambler at the base, he became a social drinker. Still he retained a love of Christian Science and so was attracted to talk with the Minister and to attend services at the base.

One morning, after renewing his interest in Christian Science, he telephoned the Minister to help him with a severely abscessed jaw. During their conversation the Minister made purity, truth, and love so attractive to the serviceman that he wanted to begin the regular study of the Lesson-Sermon found in the Christian Science Quarterly. By noon the pain had left his jaw, and soon all traces of the difficulty had disappeared. A day or two later the Minister drove him to the nearest Christian Science Reading Room to buy a Bible, markers, and marking chalk to help him with his study.
