One God, One Cause, One Mind

Our Leader in Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy, had the faculty of concise expression. She chose her words carefully and used them to express the exact meaning she wished to convey. In one of her letters, in two short sentences, she lays the foundation for all metaphysical practice. By building on this foundation, one can attain constructive results. Her words had a profound effect on me, and I should like to tell you of the experience.

One day I came to my office very much depressed. I had been struggling with a physical difficulty that did not seem to yield, and I was in need of help. As I opened the mail I was surprised to find that someone had sent me a copy of the Christian Science Sentinel, dated April 4, 1936. In a box at the top of the Editorial page were two sentences taken from a letter written by Mrs. Eddy in 1896: "To know there is but one God, one Cause, one effect, one Mind, heals instantly. Have but one God, and your reflection of Him does the healing."

Suddenly the depressed feeling was forgotten. If Mrs. Eddy had stepped into the office and delivered the message in person, it could not have reached me more forcefully.
