Helping Each Other

[Of Special Interest to Children]

Mary loved the truths she was learning in Christian Science. One of her favorite Bible stories was the parable of the good Samaritan. When a man asked Jesus what he should do to inherit eternal life, Jesus replied, "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself" (Luke 10: 27). Then Jesus told the parable as an example of neighborliness.

When we help others, we are being obedient to Jesus' teaching. Not long ago Mary had occasion to show her love toward her neighbor by helping Peter, a boy who sat across from her in school, He looked very unhappy when the teacher said that he had not turned in a test paper. He knew that meant a failing grade for him. Mary felt sorry for Peter, because he worked hard and had always made good grades. Now he was going to fail because his test paper had been lost.

It all seemed so unfair to Mary until she remembered that she was a Christian Scientist. Surely to admit that Peter had lost his test paper was giving power to error. She knew that whatever God made was good, and He made all; so whatever was not good was not made by God and so could not be true.
