Church Dedications

Lebanon, Oregon (Society).

The local Christian Science Society will hold dedication services in the church, 290 F Street, Sunday, July 5, at 11 a.m.

Christian Science churches are dedicated only when free of debt.

In September, 1914, a group of students of Christian Science met at the home of one of their number to organize a Christian Science Society. In a tented building on East Sherman Street, they began to hold services in accordance with the Manual of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts.

Property at the corner of Rose and Main Streets was purchased in 1919 and the building was remodeled. After incorporation papers were taken out in 1923, the remodeled building was moved to the back of the lot facing Rose Street. This building was sold in 1928 and a new edifice was erected.

As it became more evident that a more suitable location was needed, the membership voted to sell the property at Rose and Main Streets. After this step was taken in December, 1955, church services were held in Wilshire Hall. A building committee was appointed and in January, 1956, lots were purchased at Fourth and F Streets. An architect was selected, plans drawn and approved and construction started. The church was completed and the first service was held in May, 1957.—The Lebanon Express (July 3, 1964).

Smithtown, New York (First Church).

Dedication services for First Church of Christ, Scientist, Smith-town, will be held at 11 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., September 27. Christian Science services were first held in Smithtown in 1942 when a group of Christian Scientists met in a private home. Later in that same year the old Post Office Building on Bellemeade Avenue was made ready for services, the first of which was held on Thanksgiving Day. These quarters were enlarged in 1946 and occupied by the church until the present edifice was completed in September, 1956.

The church is now being dedicated in accordance with the established rule that Christian Science churches are dedicated only when they are free of debt. The land for the church building was a gift from two friends in Smithtown, and the cost of the building was defrayed by contributions from members and friends and a gift from the Selina C. Cornish Fund.

This beautiful colonial church-which is a branch of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston. Massachusetts is on Route III at the intersection of Mount Pleasant Road, in Smithtown.

It consists of the main church auditorium, a Sunday School, a Reading Room, and a nursery. Sunday services are held at 11 a.m. The Sunday School convenes at the same time. Wednesday evening meetings are held at 8:15. The Reading Room is open daily (except Saturdays and holidays) from 2 to 4 p.m., and on Fridays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.

All are invited to attend the dedication services.—Smithtown Messenger (September 17, 1964).
