Throughout my childhood and...
Throughout my childhood and teens, I seldom went through a winter without being kept in bed for two weeks or so by severe colds and sore throat. It was not until my freshman year at college that I was willing to study daily and to make a persistent effort to live the teachings of Christian Science by expressing more of the higher qualities, such as unselfishness, obedience, and humility. As my understanding began to grow more spiritual, false traits of character yielded and a better sense of health was demonstrated.
While driving the car one morning, shortly before the birth of our first child, I felt a very sharp sensation in my chest. Breathing became painful; so I quickly pulled over to the curb. As I commenced to pray earnestly to be free from a rapidly growing sense of fear, these words came to me from the Christian Science Hymnal (No. 412):
The Christ is here, all dreams of error
breaking,
Unloosing bonds of all captivity.
These words brought an instant recognition of the omnipresence of God, and I felt a tremendous sense of "the peace of God, which passeth all understanding" (Phil. 4:7). Gratitude for God's dear care and protection melted all sense of fear and pain.
This physical condition had been experienced several times before, and through prayerful acknowledgment of man's selfhood as a child of God I had always been able to overcome it, although not permanently. This time, however, my consciousness was so illumined with Christs precious love that I was finally and firmly convinced of the unreality of error. It dawned upon me that I had at last accepted my God-given freedom from bondage to this material belief. It was also clear that there could not actually be any recurrence of something that had no reality in the first place. This was about six years ago, and there has indeed been no recurrence.
Further study and sincere prayer led me to take the step of having class instruction. My gratitude knows no bounds for this illuminating experience. I am so grateful to have a sincere appreciation of the priceless teachings of Christ Jesus, as well as an increased appreciation of Mrs. Eddy's contribution to mankind.
For a happy home, for the spiritual truths which are revealed to us through increased understanding, and for numerous proofs of God's care, I am humbly grateful.—(Mrs.) Susan Cory, Kansas City, Missouri.
