At one time I had been a pupil...

At one time I had been a pupil in a Christian Science Sunday School, but as a teen-ager I followed what falsely appeared to be the line of least resistance— materialism. College and military service mesmerized me into thinking that being one of the crowd could be achieved only through indulgence in smoking and drinking.

Upon completion of my military service, I submitted many job applications in several cities, but no employment was available to me. Even minor or temporary jobs evaded me. This extended period of unemployment made my outlook on life bitter and resentful. In desperation I picked up a copy of Science and Health by our Leader. My progress with it was quite slow at first, but I was beginning to see myself in a new light. Still my bad habits of old clung to me.

One morning while reading from the chapter entitled "Footsteps of Truth," I was awakened to take a stand for my real self as God's image and likeness. I put my smoking supplies away, poured the remains of a bottle of liquor down the drain, and became free. The very same day I received an offer of a job, which enabled me to begin work and attend a university in the same city. Since this unfoldment, I have found that the Lord has poured out a blessing "that there shall not be room enough to receive it" (Mal. 3:10).
