Even in the evangelical churches, while laymen are always much more prominent and important in "running" the Church, their place is more likely to be in the business management of the property, the financial campaigns and in the social arrangements than in really religious leadership. Bible classes and prayer groups, yes; application of theology to daily life situations, no.

The newer thought about laymen and their place in the Church began with that grand old man J. H. Oldham, in connection with the preparation for the Oxford Conference on Church, Community and State in 1937. He developed the thesis that made the layman the church in the world and the expression of the Church's true calling and function.
