Health Is a Present Reality

To one who is suffering, pain and sickness seem very real indeed. But spiritual understanding enables the sufferer to rise above the false claim of error, to throw off the bondage of sickness, and to enjoy the freedom that God has bestowed upon man. The Psalmist imparted assurance to the sick when he sang (Ps. 42: 11), "Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God."

The reality of ever-present health and the unreality of sickness are firmly established in the teachings of Christian Science. They reveal that health is demonstrable when it is understood to be an ever-present spiritual fact and that sickness is seen as an illusion resulting from the belief of life in matter or ignorance of God and man's true being. Mrs. Eddy writes in Science and Health (p. 339), "The basis of all health, sinlessness, and immortality is the great fact that God is the only Mind; and this Mind must he not merely believed, but it must be understood."

To improve physical health it is necessary to understand that God, the infinite divine Mind, is a loving God who would not inflict discord upon His creation. As the divine Father of all, He has created man spiritual, wholly good, and maintains him as inseparable from His loving care. This is clearly implied by Paul's words in Romans (8:38, 39), "I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord."
