All my life I have admired the gentleness, intelligence, patience, and integrity expressed by my father. I have always wanted to be like him. However, long before he had reached the age which is written on my driver's license, his sense of hearing was impaired. This impairment I did not want to inherit.
When I became a student of Christian Science and realized that God is the Father of man, I saw that the good qualities that my human father expressed are Godlike qualities, that they are inherited by all God's offspring, and that the belief of deafness or any other impairment is no part of God's creation but is an illusion of the carnal, or mortal, mind which must be put off.
However, the belief in and fear of deafness must have remained latent in my thought, for when I was on an extended trip, flying many thousands of miles in various kinds of aircraft, I experienced a severe sense of congestion in my ear. In spite of chills and fever which accompanied the condition, I studied Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy and prayed all night.
