Activities for the Armed Services

When deeply depressed and seriously considering suicide, a hospital corpsman took some Christian Science literature which a Christian Science Minister for the Armed Services had placed in a distribution rack at a naval installation. So touched was he by what he read that he lost every thought of suicide and regained his composure and peace of mind.

While filled with gratitude for this healing, the corpsman began discussing Christian Science with a marine who had joined The Mother Church at an early age, but who had acquired little knowledge of this truth. So inspired was the corpsman that he was able to help the marine gain a demonstrable understanding of Christian Science.

Several weeks later, while surfacing from given depths of water, the marine failed to follow instructions on one of his practice dives, and, in consequence, when he reached the surface, suffered severely from air invalidism, or the bends. As soon as his condition was discovered, he was pulled aboard a safety boat, placed in a pressure chamber, and subjected to great pressure. Once inside the chamber he began to repeat to himself, "God is all there is." Instead of becoming less, the pain became more and more intense. Then, to quote the marine, "I completely put my trust in God and spoke out as loudly as I could, 'God is all there is." At that moment the pain stopped completely."
