One way the student of Christian Science learns to know God is through this definition of Him, given in the Glossary of the textbook by Mrs. Eddy (p. 587): "The great I am; the all-knowing, all-seeing, all-acting, all-wise, all-loving, and eternal; Principle; Mind; Soul; Spirit; Life; Truth; Love; all substance; intelligence."

Of the seven synonyms for God given in the definition, all are mentioned or implied in the Bible. For anyone who finds it hard to accept Principle as God, I should like to relate the following healing. Some years ago I was experiencing an unpleasant and sometimes painful skin condition. I worked to know the truth for myself, but the healing was slow in coming. At a time when I was very much discouraged I read a discussion of the subject of discouragement.

It likened the situation to a ship which while it is steaming ahead makes evident progress. If it becomes necessary for it to go through a lock and to stand still temporarily, this too is progress and not a reason for discouragement. Working out a problem in Christian Science is like the progress of the ship: even though there may be no physical change, there is progress going on in our spiritual understanding.
