Before I had ever heard the...
Before I had ever heard the precious words "Christian Science" I had been reared in a lovely family, adherents of the Greek Orthodox faith, in which high standards and good morals reigned; yet there was fear of sin, sickness, and death in our thought and speech.
My prayers were directed to asking for things to be changed and things to be given, such as health, peace, and harmony. I prayed for peace and harmony because at this particular time World War II was on, and there was a great deal of fear and unrest in the country where I lived. Of course, Truth was there all the time, but I did not know about it; therefore, I could not see it until I was married to a student of Christian Science and had to leave home to go to a strange land, to live among strange people and customs, and to speak a strange language.
Life was going on harmoniously until one day loneliness and homesickness came to the surface. Previously, these mortal errors were hidden deep down behind the satisfaction of human companionship. My husband came home one day to find me unhappy, disturbed, and in tears. When he asked what was wrong with me, mortal mind gave all kinds of excuses; but my husband saw the powerlessness of the error. He recommended a visit to a friend whom I had never met before; however, I came to know that she was a very devoted student of Christian Science, and through her consecrated prayers she helped me.
Our first visit together was very joyous and most comforting, and through her unselfish love and untiring help I was enabled to take my first footsteps in the path of Truth. She gave me the simple truth that God is Love and ever present.
I went home thinking about the divine ideas she had given me, and I had an instantaneous healing. All suggestions of loneliness and homesickness left me; I had a feeling of friendship for everyone I met. This was an early lesson that "the Christian Science God is universal, eternal, divine Love, which changeth not and causeth no evil, disease, nor death" (Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, p. 140).
At first I read the textbook aloud merely as a means of improving my English, but later on I found out what a treasure it contains behind every word. It is the message of Christ-healing, announced and proclaimed again to all. I find healing, comfort, and joy through my daily study of the Bible Lesson from the Christian Science Quarterly.
My healings of physical difficulties and of character traits have been many since I became a student of Christian Science. When I was told by a dentist that a wisdom tooth which was causing much pain and suffering was impacted and needed to be removed immediately, Christian Science came to my rescue again, and I sought the prayerful help of a practitioner in the country which we were visiting at the time on a world tour. The healing of the pain was instantaneous, and the tooth did not have to be extracted, for which I was deeply grateful.
Members of my family have also been blessed and benefited by the Science of Christ. A close relative was healed of uremic poisoning through the devoted and consecrated prayers of the practitioner first mentioned in this testimony. The doctor had given up the patient, saying only God could save her. Through Christian Science help, within one week she returned home well and happy.
I am grateful for our authorized periodicals and wish also to express gratitude for our lectures, which repeat the spirit of the Sermon on the Mount by bringing healing and salvation to the receptive thought. Membership in The Mother Church and a branch church has been a constant and effective source of spiritual growth and unfoldment. This advancement has been furthered by the precious experience of class instruction.—(Mrs.) Sophie Gee, Pomona, California.
