A Unique Meeting

The Annual Meeting of The Mother Church in June of each year is a most unusual meeting. The Church Manual by Mrs. Eddy stipulates that "no other than it officers are required to be present" (Art. XIII, Sect. 1). Yet members from many parts of the world assemble for this meeting and remain for the inspirational and workshop meetings which are held during the ensuing week.

What is unique about this meeting is that no business is transacted by the members. No elections take place. The underlying purpose of the meeting is to report progress and to provide the members with pertinent information regarding the affairs of The Mother Church. To this end, reports from the Treasurer, Clerk, and Committees, and general reports from the Field are given. Then, over the next two or three days, inspirational meetings are held for the purpose of encouraging and enlightening, strengthening and enlivening, those who find it possible to be present.

One attending these meetings will want to consider quietly and prayerfully each day the spiritual significance of the meetings, the magnitude of Mrs. Eddy's discovery of Christian Science, and the church organization which she was divinely impelled to establish. Then he will see how the spiritual animus of her discovery develops genuine Christianity in the lives of her followers; how it enables them to work constructively with others in preserving and promoting the Cause of Christian Science, which is the most important religious and scientific development in the world since Christianity was established.
