"Shut the lions' mouths"

[Of Special Interest to Children]

Janie was learning in a Christian Science Sunday School of God and His care for us. The teacher told many stories from the Bible which illustrated this ever-present care. Janie's favorite story was about Daniel in the lions' den. In the room where her class was taught, there was a picture of Daniel as he stood unafraid with the lions behind him.

One Sunday morning Janie told her teacher that she did not want to stay in Sunday School because she had a stomachache. The teacher explained to Janie that the stomachache was not from God, who loves all His children and sends them only good. She said that a stomachache is only a mortal mind belief which would seem to have power to harm, just as people believed that the lions had power to harm Daniel; but because Daniel was obedient in loving and serving God, he was not afraid and knew the lions could not hurt him.

The teacher then read to Janie what the king said to Daniel before he was put into the lions' den (Dan. 6:16), "Thy God whom thou servest continually, he will deliver thee." She also read from Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy (p. 514), "Understanding the control which Love held over all, Daniel felt safe in the lions' den, and Paul proved the viper to he harmless."
