Mind Governs Every Action of the Body

A Christian Scientist recognizes his body to be his servant, not his master. That is why he endeavors to protect it by prayerfully keeping it under the control of divine Mind. And so he learns to acknowledge this control, as it is brought out in a statement by Mrs. Eddy in "The People's Idea of God" (p. 8), "Mind, that governs the universe, governs every action of the body as directly as it moves a planet and controls the muscles of the arm."

Under Mind's control, the functioning of the body has but one purpose—to serve the one possessing it. And, as do others, a Christian Scientist appreciates the normal functioning of his body. We are assured in Science that when one's thought has been completely spiritualized the corporeal sense of body will be laid off. But in the meantime the corporeal sense of the body must be subdued, brought under the control of divine Mind and its all-embracing law. This is accomplished through understanding and demonstrating the control of this Mind and through giving up all faith in and fear of matter and its supposed laws.

Christ Jesus lived so in accord with divine law that he was able not only to bring himself into harmony with the divine government but to bring others under this government also. Through his clear realization of man's inseparability from God, abnormal physical conditions were corrected as easily as an expert mathematician detects and corrects an error in computation. Abnormal conditions—physical or mental—have no more support from the law of God than a mistake in mathematics has from the law of mathematics.
