Quelling the Mob Spirit

Abraham Lincoln once said, "There is no grievance that is a fit object of redress by mob law." These words of a great statesman may well lie heeded today when frequent reports of mob violence show the need of such wisdom. To revert to primitive mob action would be to forsake Christian civilization.

No individual need let himself be used by lawless influences rampant in others. If anyone is swept along by the mob spirit, this is the result of his ignorance of his real self and of the self-control which the understanding of man in God's likeness bestows on one. Mary Baker Eddy says in "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany" (p. 161), "He who gains self-knowledge, self-control, and the kingdom of heaven within himself, within his own consciousness, is saved through Christ, Truth.'"

In the way here outlined, Christian Science demonstrates the supreme control of God, divine Mind, and causes the individual to remain conscious of his inherent dignity and wisdom. He is in this way saved from the insubordinate forces of human will. A society is safe only as long as its members practice self-control and retain their sense of individual unity with God's will.
