Before the establishment of easy communication between people and nations, messengers were entrusted to bear important messages. The Biblical prophets are especially thought of as individuals who were divinely chosen to carry the message of God to the people of their time. Sometimes the message was one of encouragement, sometimes one of arousing the people to the need for obedience to God.
