God's Loving Care
[Of Special Interest to Children]
Louise loved school and especially enjoyed the days when she could take her lunch. For on those days she ate with the other girls, and they would talk, laugh, and play games.
But on one particular day Louise was very much troubled. It all started with a smallpox epidemic which had broken out in the school. The principal had asked that each child be vaccinated. Louise's mother, who was a student of Christian Science, knew of Mrs. Eddy's statement in "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany" (p. 128), "Christian Scientists abide by the laws of God and the laws of the land." And she was willing to be obedient.
However, at that time, in the country in which Louise lived, the law gave a parent the right to object to vaccination if he or she chose. Because of this particular provision of the law, her mother decided that they would turn wholeheartedly to God for protection and harmony. As a result, she took the necessary steps, and Louise was not vaccinated.
