This story commences some years...
This story commences some years ago, when wanderlust landed me in Boston, Massachusetts, in the early part of December, without either a job or anything to recommend me to an employer. Before Christmas Day I had found work, only to lose it at the end of the first day. This was the pattern of things for some time. But as I lost one job, another came along; so I was never without food or shelter.
Then an interesting thing happened while I was unemployed. I passed a small shop and noticed in the window copies of a newspaper called The Christian Science Monitor. The unusual name attracted my attention, and I bought a copy. I liked it because of its attitude toward my own country. But I left Boston with no knowledge of The Mother Church or its activities, and the Monitor was forgotten.
