WVS Bulletin
Mary Lovell in the WVS Bulletin, monthly journal Women's Voluntary Service for Civil Defence London, England
The age in which we live demands a scientific attitude of mind in dissecting matters which a generation ago were accepted unquestioningly. We feel, and justly, that we should understand what we believe and why we believe it.
At the same time—it is because many of us know ourselves to be incapable of analysing our ideas scientifically—we allow the holiness of the Christmas season to be swamped in commercial materialism while feeling sure that there is something wrong in so doing. A mental slackness which should not be permitted. And Christmas is holy. Not because the birth of an honoured child is commemorated at the season but because behind that birth lie truths which we should be at pains to examine.
