Christian Science and the Human Being

Christian Science directs thought to man's spiritual identity, invisible to the physical senses but real nonetheless. An inquirer may wonder what effect this will have on his present human experience.

An understanding of man's spiritual identity gives new meaning to human life by revealing the spiritual values which underlie it—our life purpose becomes increasingly unselfed, our interests enlarged, our goals better defined. Dependence upon luck, circumstances, and conditions is replaced with trust in the ever-dependable divine Principle, which we call God. Our efforts are more wisely directed, and our lives become spiritually enriched. Christ Jesus declared (John 10:10), "I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly."

In Christian Science we do not ignore the present human sense of ourselves. On the contrary, we place our lives under the control of creative Principle. Christian Science strengthens the deep-seated desire for self-preservation, elevating this desire eventually to include only what is worthy of being preserved—those moral and spiritual qualities with which each of us is divinely endowed.
