In 1942 when I was living in a friend's house, I had influenza. In addition I had dysentery and was quite helpless. One afternoon a friend who was a student of Christian Science came to call on me. She sat beside my bed and stayed with me all through the long night. I feel that I might have passed on if she had not been there. She encouraged me with spiritual truths, read to me, and had me repeat healing passages from Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. I was able to get up the following day and was soon able to work again.

Late one afternoon on the day a Christian Science lecture was to be given in the branch church of which I am a member, I had the following experience. I was expecting to attend the lecture and so was preparing an early evening meal for myself, since I now live alone in an apartment.

I removed some well-cooked bacon from a pan on the stove and started to pour the boiling fat into a container. Through some mishandling, or through the pan's slipping, I poured the boiling fat onto my other hand instead of into the cup. The pain was severe. I managed to wipe the hand and go to the telephone to call a Christian Science practitioner. I called several, but received no response. They were all on their way to the lecture.
