The Irradiance of Day

"The days of God's creating are discernible to humanity
through the light of spiritual illumination"

Students of Christian Science are constantly striving to find the spiritual reality of being, the truth with which to correct every false claim of so-called mortal mind. As they regularly study the Lesson-Sermons, provided in the Christian Science Quarterly, attend church services, participate in church activities, and turn to God for guidance in their daily affairs, they gain help and a deeper understanding of spiritual realities. They are sometimes richly rewarded by the light that suddenly illuminates what may have been a familiar statement in the Bible or Mrs. Eddy's writings.

These flashes of spiritual insight evidence Immanuel, "God with us," the Christ, leading us to the source of real being. They are the beacons that guide us out of the dream of material living.

A quotation from the Bible became illuminated one day to the writer and opened a whole new avenue of mental exploration. It is found in the thirty-third chapter of Deuteronomy, where Moses is quoted as saying, "As thy days, so shall thy strength be." Interpreted materially, one might conclude that during days of trouble and adversity, God will give one strength to meet or cope with these problems. But Christian Science gives a higher meaning, which imparts strength and healing, as well as comfort and encouragement.

In the Glossary of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy (p. 584) the definition of "day" is given as follows :

"The irradiance of Life; light, the spiritual idea of Truth and Love.

" 'And the evening and the morning were the first day.' (Genesis i. 5.) The objects of time and sense disappear in the illumination of spiritual understanding, and Mind measures time according to the good that is unfolded. This unfolding is God's day, and 'there shall be no night there.'"

If we understand this spiritual interpretation of day, we become aware of the activity of Spirit in consciousness. In proportion as this activity goes on, we lose the sense of limitation and restriction imposed upon human consciousness by the false measurements of hours, calendars, and material events.

Sometimes evil, or animal magnetism, claims that one's day is a period fraught with unhappiness and weakness. But in the Bible and Mrs. Eddy's writings, as well as in the Christian Science periodicals, church services, and lectures, one finds a deep reservoir of inspiration and strength at hand which can bless him.

In the first chapter of Genesis is found the logical sequence of unfoldment leading up to the Sabbath rest of dominion. The steps in this dawn of ideas are recorded as so many days, each one revealing more clearly the acme of perfection, the universe and every living thing created and governed by the only God.

These steps of unfoldment are also the order of Christian Science. They are illumined by the light of spiritual understanding, which divides the unreal from the real. Activity and productivity are found to be completely spiritual, and the evening and the morning are not made by a sun in the heavens, but by the dawning of the light of Truth. This activity is manifested in the revelation of divine ideas, and the highest idea is man, made in the image and likeness of God, wholly perfect. "God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day" (Gen. 2:2).

The days of God's creating are discernible to humanity through the light of spiritual illumination, and we reflect this light as we turn away from the false claims of physical so-called knowledge and let spiritual thoughts unfold in our consciousness. More and more we find the strength and goodness of God manifested in our experience as we awaken to the realization of what already exists in Science.

In the ease of difficult human relationships we shall find healing and harmony when we accept the truth that there is but one Mind governing all and exclude the error that many minds are trying to understand each other. The relationship of ideas is God-governed, and this relationship cannot be put asunder by human frailties and personal sense. The understanding and demonstration of Christian Science unite men in the truth and remove evil from human consciousness.

If mortal mind claims day to be a time of struggle to overcome a lack of work or supply, we can turn our thought to God for our daily bread of inspiration and guidance, instead of being swayed by so-called laws of economic cycles and by human fears, and thus be about our Father's business. Such spiritual activity will inevitably result in the supply of whatever we may need at the moment.

Should the carnal mind tempt us to believe that day is a time of physical distress either for ourselves or for another, complete release will be found when we turn to Christian Science and with absolute reliance on God's power fill our consciousness with the specific truth necessary to destroy the false claim that would fetter and bind.

The Father is faithful, and His promises are kept. And one of these promises reads, "From the first day that thou didst set thine heart to understand, . . . thy words were heard" (Dan. 10:12).

Each time we truly love, each time we manifest gentleness to man, beast, or flower, each time we lift our thought to the Father in prayer and consecration, we feel the irradiance of spiritual day.

There is no period of time, calling itself a day or days, during which we do not need spiritual strength. And in the inspiration of divine Science, the claims of time and sense disappear, and the irradiance of day appears. God unfolds to our consciousness the discernment that leads into harmony and dominion.
