RADIO PROGRAM No. 13 - The Truth That Makes Free

HOST: The great American statesman, Thomas Jefferson, voiced the conviction of freedom-loving people when he said, "The God who gave us life, gave us liberty at the same time." Today the cry for freedom calls out from the barbed wire of Berlin to the dark reaches of the Congo. Not only political freedom, but freedom from fear, ignorance, disease, remain among the world's great challenges. In a talk some time ago on the meaning of freedom, C. V. Newsom, former President of New York University, made this observation [speech delivered at the University of Kansas City, Kansas City, Missouri; published in Vital Speeches of the Day]:

''No word in our language can fire men to a greater frenzy." But he points out: "The bitter truth ... is that too many men and women ... do not understand freedom; they prattle about it, but they possess no real comprehension of the concept." And he states, "The concept must be comprehended in all its fullness ... if we are to prevent the ultimate suicide of the human race."

In view of the confusion as to what freedom is and where it comes from, how can we go about finding it?
