For several years I always carried a doctor's prescription to be filled when my heart gave me trouble. A friend who knew of the difficulty advised me to take up the study of Christian Science, because he had had help from it himself. I began to read the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, and to attend a branch Church of Christ, Scientist. A Christian Science practitioner kindly helped me to get a clearer understanding of what I was reading and hearing.

One Sunday morning in church, I suddenly collapsed. The practitioner was present and helped me immediately. I felt the support and love of all who recognized my need. In a very short time I was able to walk out to our car. My wife drove me to the practitioner's home, where the afternoon was spent in prayerful rest. I shall always remember Mrs. Eddy's poem "Communion Hymn" as the practitioner sang it that afternoon. These are the opening lines (Poems, p. 75):
