Sharing

William Standish Reed, M.D. in "The Christian Physician" published in Sharing, journal of the Fellowship of St. Luke San Diego, California

Recently during a visit to one of our hospital wards I met a friend who is a minister of a local Baptist Church. He was very worried and manifested a serious concern. ... I asked him what his difficulty was and he told me that his 13 year old son was in a coma, suffering from hepatitis, and he was fearful that he might die. I asked him if he would like to have me see his boy. He was very pleased at this offer and we went into his son's room.

I examined the child and found him to be indeed in very serious condition. It seemed that at that moment everything possible was being done, so I reassured the pastor and instructed him not to despair and was about to depart when it suddenly occurred to me that even if the patient happened to be the son of a minister, that I, as a Christian, should offer the family the opportunity of prayer. This I did and the offer was immediately accepted.
