How the Needs of the Pupil Are Met in Sunday School

[This is the second of four addresses given at the meeting in the Extension of The Mother Church on June 6, 1962. Another address will appear next week.]

In "Miscellaneous Writings" our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, says (p. 3), "The lessons we learn in divine Science are applicable to all the needs of man." The basic need of the boy or girl of Sunday School age is to demonstrate his or her God-given individuality. In the Christian Science Sunday School, pupils of all ages learn to do this.

One of the great aids to me as a pupil was the fact that in Sunday School we were taught the Scriptures. In the Bible we could see divine Mind in action: We could see things happening when Principle was demonstrated. We could see divine Love expressed in the humanity and spiritual power of our great Master, Christ Jesus, and through Daniel, Paul, and others.

The Sunday School enabled us not only to explore absolute Truth, but also to see how the truth may be expressed on earth, here and now, in situations similar to those in which we found ourselves. In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mrs. Eddy emphasizes Principle, rule, and demonstration. It is this wonderful balance between absolute Principle, on the one hand, and the rules of action which flow from Principle, on the other hand, which is so valuable to the Sunday School pupil. He is grateful to learn both of his heavenly rights and of his Christian duties.
