When I began an earnest study...

When I began an earnest study of Christian Science, I used reading glasses as well as distance ones. One evening as I started to read the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, I thought, "This is the truth that I am reading, and I certainly don't need glasses to perceive the Word of Truth." I removed my reading glasses at once and have not worn them again. Indeed, I have since been able to read even very small print easily.

It took considerably longer for me to discard distance glasses. My driver's license had required the wearing of them, but when it was renewed in 1957, the result of my vision test was such that this restriction was eliminated. I was grateful for this, but I continued to wear the glasses.

While I was on vacation two years ago, they began to trouble my eyes, and I carried them more often than I wore them, except while driving. A few months later, I was serving one Wednesday evening on the staff of a Christian Science REading Room, and I put the glasses in my handbag. After church when I was driving home without having put them on, I discovered I was no longer dependent on them. It was a wonderful experience!
