The Importance of Individuality

The Old Testament places emphasis upon a race, a people, a nation; the New Testament directs thought to the importance of the individual.

The teachings of Christ Jesus point to individual freedom not only as desirable but as essential to the progress of an enlightened Christian society. But, as is clearly evident, this freedom carries with it individual responsibility, without which freedom would be impossible. One who claims freedom for himself and overlooks the corresponding responsibility lacks the wisdom that justifies his freedom and perpetuates it.

The Book of Proverbs (Chapter 4) admonishes: "Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding. Exalt her, and she shall promote thee: she shall bring thee to honour, when thou dost embrace her." The teachings of Christian Science bring out clearly that such wisdom was never more needed than now.
